Let’s be honest — the idea of getting the whole family picture-perfect (especially with little ones in tow) can feel a bit… overwhelming. As a mom of three and a longtime family photographer, I get it. You want beautiful, natural photos that truly capture your family, not forced smiles or meltdown moments.
The good news? A little preparation goes a long way. Here are my tried-and-true tips for preparing your kids for a family session — so you can show up stress-free and leave with a gallery full of magic (and zero tears).
1. Set Expectations (in a Kid-Friendly Way)
Let your children know what’s going to happen during the session. Instead of saying “You need to smile for the camera,” try:
🗣️ “We’re going to the beach to play and take some fun pictures with Miss Kamila!”
Keeping it playful helps kids feel excited rather than pressured.
2. Keep Them Fed and Well-Rested
You’ve heard it before, but it’s worth repeating — hungry or overtired kids struggle to stay happy.Plan for a solid meal beforehand, and if possible, schedule around nap times. Bring non-messy snacks (like mini pretzels or puffs) and a water bottle just in case.
3. Let Them Help Pick Something
Give them a small choice to feel included — “Do you want to wear your blue shirt or your white one?” or “Should we bring your favorite toy for one photo?”
When kids feel part of the process, they’re more likely to cooperate and have fun.
4. Don’t Stress About Perfection
Trust me — I’ve seen it all. Grass stains, sandy hands, goofy giggles, sudden toddler mood swings… and they all make for beautiful, real moments
Kids don’t need to behave perfectly to get amazing photos. In fact, sometimes those unexpected moments end up being your favorites.
5. Pack a “Session Bag”
A few things that might come in handy:
Wet wipes
Backup outfit (just in case)
Comfort item or lovey
Small bribe-worthy treat (for after the session!)
Hairbrush and a small mirror
6. Stay Calm and Keep the Energy Positive
Kids feed off your energy. If you’re stressed or anxious, they’ll feel it. But if you stay upbeat and relaxed — even if they’re being a little wild — it helps keep the mood light. I’ll guide, direct, and go with the flow. You just focus on loving on your people.
7. Trust Your Photographer (That’s Me!)
This is what I do. I know how to work with kids of all temperaments, and I’ll never rush or push them beyond what they’re comfortable with. We’ll take breaks, play games, and get down on their level — all while capturing those authentic, joy-filled moments.
Bonus Tip: Make It an Adventure!
When it feels like fun instead of a chore, everyone wins. Promise ice cream after, let them splash in the waves at the end, or turn the whole evening into a mini beach adventure. Memories + moments = magic.
You’ve Got This (and I’ve Got You)
Family sessions shouldn’t be stressful. With a little prep and the right mindset, they can actually be… fun. And when you look back at these photos years from now, you’ll be so glad you took the time to capture this season — wildness, laughter, sandy toes and all.
