Fall Minis at Fort Pickens are back! 🍂🤎

One of the biggest questions I get before family sessions is, “What should we wear?” The good news: you don’t need perfectly matching outfits to look coordinated. In fact, photographs usually look better when everyone coordinates without wearing the exact same colors. For our Fort Pickens Fall Minis, think soft, warm, coastal fall—comfortable layers, beautiful textures, and earthy colors that complement the natural scenery.

🍂 The Fall Color PaletteSome of my favorite colors for Fort Pickens are:Cream • Ivory • Camel • Tan • Chocolate Brown • Rust • Terracotta • Muted Olive • Sage • Dusty Blue • Denim • BurgundyStart with two or three main colors and mix in neutral shades to tie everyone together.For example: Sage + Tan + Coral + a Pattern that incorporates all the colors orIvory + Rust + Chocolate Brown + TanYou don't need everyone wearing every color. The goal is simply for the outfits to look like they belong together.

🤎 Coordinate — Don't Match

Instead of putting everyone in the same shirt and jeans, choose outfits with different shades, fabrics, and layers.

If Mom wears a red and pink flower print dress, Dad might wear jeans with and brown or black shirt. One child could wear denim with pink, while another wears red or maroon. The result feels coordinated without looking overly planned.

🧶 Add Texture

Texture photographs beautifully and makes neutral outfits much more interesting.

Try incorporating:

Chunky or cable-knit sweaters

Cardigans

Corduroy

Linen

Denim

Sweater dresses

Knit dresses

Suede or leather boots

Fall on the Gulf Coast doesn't always mean cold weather, so layers are especially helpful. You can get the cozy fall look without everyone overheating!

👗 Start With MomIf you're styling the entire family, I usually recommend choosing Mom's outfit first. Pick something you feel comfortable and confident wearing, then build everyone else's outfits around it.Flowy dresses, sweater dresses, wide-leg pants with a fitted sweater, or a skirt paired with a soft knit top all photograph beautifully.

👨 DadKeep Dad's outfit simple. Think chinos, khakis, or dark denim paired with a solid button-down, polo, henley, or lightweight sweater. Camel, olive, navy, cream, brown, and muted blue are all great choices.

👧 Kids & TeensLet their personalities show while keeping them within the family's color palette.Girls can wear dresses, skirts, sweaters, wide-leg pants, or jeans with a cute knit top.For boys, chinos or jeans paired with a henley, sweater, polo, or button-down work perfectly.For teens especially, don't force an outfit they hate. They'll look much more natural in photographs when they feel like themselves.

👢 Shoes Matter!Shoes are easy to forget, but they will show in your photos. Neutral boots, loafers, simple sneakers, flats, or sandals can all work depending on the outfit and weather.Try to avoid neon athletic shoes, heavily branded sneakers, or anything that pulls attention away from the rest of the family.

🚫 What to AvoidTry to skip large logos, neon colors, extremely busy patterns, and having everyone wear identical outfits.I also recommend avoiding everyone wearing solid black or everyone wearing bright white. Mixing warm neutrals and earthy shades gives your photos much more depth. Small, subtle patterns are completely fine—just balance them with solid colors on the rest of the family.

🌾 Remember the Fort Pickens Setting

Fort Pickens gives us a gorgeous combination of historic brick, sandy neutrals, sea oats, greenery, and coastal scenery. That's why warm earth tones and softer neutrals work so beautifully here. Your outfits should complement the scenery rather than compete with it. And most importantly—don't stress about making everything perfect. Choose clothes that fit well, feel comfortable, and let your family move, laugh, cuddle, and play. Those little in-between moments are often the photographs you'll love the most.
